MacBook Air M2 Review: In the new MacBook Air, some problems were discovered immediately after the release: they found cooling problems, which is why the laptop turned out to be only 10% more powerful than previous models. But everything is known in comparison, and synthetic tests contribute to this.
Some of them are point disadvantages of the new MacBook Air others for the benefits. So, the speedometer test showed that the MacBook Air M2 turned out to be head and shoulders above the rest of Apple laptops in everyday tasks, so you should definitely overlook all its shortcomings. We explain why the MacBook Air M2 is the perfect everyday choice.
MacBook Air M2 Review
The MacBook Air M2 is faster than other MacBooks. How is it?
MacBook Air M2 Performance
Despite the small MacBook Air M2 Failures, the laptop got excellent results in the Speedometer 2.0 performance tests. Moreover, in this benchmark, the MacBook confidently outperformed all other Macs. Speedometer 2.0 is a highly specialized application that, unlike other benchmarks, measures the responsiveness of a web browser by simulating user interaction.
Considering how much time users spend per day in the browser, for many, this is of considerable importance. So instead of relying on total numbers from other synthetic tests, which often provide no practical benefit, listen to the results of research.
MacBook Air 2023 is faster than others in the browser
Basecamp’s David Heinemeier Hansson talked about the making of the MacBook Air M2. He reported that he tested his Apple laptop in Speedometer 2.0, scoring 400 points. It turned out that the MacBook Air M2 is a third more powerful than its counterpart on the M1, as well as last year’s chip for the iPhone A15 Bionic. Outraged, the new MacBook is faster than a Mac on a 4.2 GHz Intel i7. Hanssen’s only clarification is that results may vary by browser, although he himself has worked with Safari. He was joined by other users who tested their devices. Here’s what came out of it.
- MacBook Pro M1 – 342 points.
- Mac mini – 297 points.
- iPad Pro M1 – 299 points.
Of course, users had doubts about the results of the MacBook Air M2, but blogger Alex Ziskind dispelled the doubts: he tested the MacBook Pro M2 – it also scored 398 points while working in Safari.
Finally, the doubts disappeared when the blogger checked MacBook Air M1 – the test showed only 293 points. So, obviously, you don’t have to listen to all the tests in a row, and there’s no doubt about the performance of the MacBook Air M2 in web applications.
MacBook Air M2 – Disadvantages
After the release of the new MacBook Air, users have noticed that the base laptop model with 256GB of memory read/write speed is noticeably slower than the same model of the previous generation. It turned out that the speed of the SSD really halved. During disassembly, it turned out that the SSD of the 13-inch MacBook Air only had a NAND chip instead of two, which simply provides high-speed writing and reading. And this memory layout doesn’t exist because of Apple’s greed, but because of a basic shortage of chips.
The Air M2’s slow SSD is no coincidence. It’s all about the shortage of crisps
Note that the MacBook Pro on M2 has the same problem: the 512GB version has two 256GB SSD modules, the 1TB version has four, and their test results are the same as the MacBook Pro M1 – this indicates that it was a forced economy on the base models. This is confirmed by insider reports that potential owners of custom “firmware” will face a delay in their orders until August.
So using the weakest version SSD in MacBook Air M2 due to a global shortage of components, as well as manufacturing issues caused by the pandemic. Take the same targeted lockdowns in businesses caused by the infamous COVID-19. Add to that the tension in the world and you can see why the iPhone 14 will have last year’s processor.
It is a pity, of course, that Apple did not warn about this nuance in advance, but the company still did not lie to users. Michelle Del Rio was partly right, saying that the new high-density NAND chips in SSDs will be even more productive in real-world tasks. Working in the browser is perhaps one of the most frequently thrown tasks on a laptop for any user, there’s nowhere more real. Apple said it, but you didn’t believe it in vain!
