After they also end, the course is cleaning the Photos app of useless images. When we photograph, we often take several identical shots “just in case”.

Since the “just in case” almost never happens, such photos, as well as duplicates, remain in the memory of the smartphone. To do this, Apple has added a tool to identify duplicate photos and clean them up in the iOS 16 Photos app.

When using this feature, excess photos are moved to the Recently Deleted album, from where they will be permanently deleted after thirty days.

To use this feature, your iPhone must have iOS 16 installed. At the moment, the system only exists in the beta version for developers.

We do not recommend installing beta versions on the main device due to possible system instability and compatibility issues with unsuitable third-party programs. If you decide to install it anyway, remember to create a backup copy.

  • On an iPhone with iOS 16, open the Photos app.
  • Go to the “Albums” tab.
  • Scroll down to the “Other” section.
  • Go to the “Duplicates” album.
  • All duplicate photos will be in this album.

The system can combine not only two identical images but also more.

To remove duplicates proceed as follows:

  • Click the “Merge” button next to each stack of duplicates.
  • If you want to remove all duplicate images at once, click “Select” in the upper right corner.
  • Tap on “Select All”.
  • Click “Merge N Duplicates”.

Previously, these actions were only available through third-party, often paid, apps. Now it is part of the operating system. If you decide the pictures were mistakenly deleted, simply restore them from the Recently Deleted folder.
