One important thing to note is that Find My Device is available on all computers running Windows. And while it’s probably more used to find laptops and tablets because, after all, they’re most likely to get lost, also serves to locate a desktop PC.

How to Enable “Find My Device” in Windows

In this case, we’ll show the procedure from a Windows 10 laptop, but the steps don’t change much for Windows 11 (although we’ll explain that later as well). The first thing to do is go to the start menu and search find my device.

Once we enter this section we will find this screen. As you will see, it is mandatory to have a Microsoft account and sign in to it to activate this feature.

Once we are logged in with our username and password, click on “Change”.

Then we will see a box that asks for our permission to periodically record the location of the device.

Done, from now on Find my device will regularly record the location of our computer or tablet so that we can find it easily in case of theft or loss. It is important to keep in mind that Windows will ask you to enable Location Services on the PC, in case it is disabled.

To enable this feature in Windows 11 you need to enter Settings > Privacy & Security and click on it change to turn on Find My Device.

If our computer or tablet is lost, we can easily track it from the Microsoft website. The first thing we have to do is go to account.microsoft.com/devices and log in with the same credentials we are logged in with on the device in question.

There we will see the list of equipment linked to our account and we can follow them from finding my device.

Upon entering this section, a map will open indicating the location of our Windows PC. If at the beginning it shows you an old location, we only have to click on “To look for”, in the box in the upper left corner of the map. On the other end, the computer will beep and let you know that we are trying to locate it.

If we zoom in on the map, we can see the precise location of the equipment. In addition, if we deem it relevant, we can block access so that our files and data are not at the mercy of whoever owns our computer or tablet.
