This article explains how to temporarily deactivate your Instagram account, or you can delete your Instagram account entirely. Currently, Instagram does not allow users to deactivate their accounts from the application, presumably for security reasons.

How to Delete Your Instagram Account?

This is what you need to do if you want to disable your Instagram account for a temporary break.

Open your web browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, or other), type instagram.com in the field of URLs, and press Enter or Go.

The home page will appear. Instagram, and you should see a button on the page that says Log in. If you are accessing from a mobile device, it will be at the bottom of your screen. Click or tap on it and log in to your Instagram account with your username and password.

Whether you’re signing in from a desktop or mobile web, you’ll see a profile icon in the far right bottom menu, just like inside of the application.

Just below your profile details, you should see a large button that says Edit profile. Click or tap on it.

Scroll to the bottom of the next page and look for the blue link that says Temporarily disable my account. Click or tap on it.

Instagram will take you to a page that offers you a menu dropdown with options to choose the reason you want to deactivate your account.

Click or tap the dropdown and select the appropriate reason. Some suggested tips will then appear along with a request for you to return to Introduce your password if you want to go ahead.

Click or tap the big blue Temporarily Deactivate Account button to deactivate the account. Click or tap to confirm if Instagram gives you a pop-up message (in case you accidentally clicked/tapped).

Don’t panic if you deactivate your account but can’t log in after trying to reactivate it by logging back in a few minutes later. If you try to log back in through the web browser or mobile app immediately, you may get a message that says, “We’re not done deactivating your account yet. If you want to reactivate it, please try again in a few hours.” You can only deactivate your account once a week.

Instagram will take you to a page to confirm that your account has been temporarily deactivated. To reactivate it, you just have to log in again through Instagram.

You can restore your account at any time. An additional alternative to deactivation or deletion is simply limiting access to your profile by making your Instagram profile private.

How to permanently delete your Instagram account?

Like the temporary deactivation of accounts, Instagram also does not allow users to delete their accounts from within the app. Again this is presumably for security reasons.

Open a web browser, log in to Instagram and go to the Instagram account deletion page. The page is only accessible through the direct link. There is no way to get there from your profile.

To continue the removal process, click or touch the menu dropdown and select your reason.

You will be prompted to return to enter your password. Just do it.

When you’re ready, press permanently deletes my account.

The deletion is permanent. You will never be able to restore your account and recover all your photos, videos, likes, comments, or followers. Even if you decide to delete everything in the end, keep in mind that doing so does not mean that your photos and videos disappear from the network forever. Everything you post or upload to Instagram (and social networks in general) remains accessible by the social network itself.
