It probably happened to everyone that the Internet simply stopped working for no reason. Usually, in this case, we either check the account balance to make sure that the payment for the month has passed, or we restart the router, without really thinking about what it gives.
It just has to be. But overall restarting only resets the temporary settings without fixing the problem as such. And to do everything as it should, you need to use a special tool designed to identify problems and fix them.
NetTools is an application that will replace most sysadmin tools
Annex NetTools is perhaps a unique tool that will allow you to check the Internet directly from your iPhone. How to check, you ask? Yes, under no circumstances. Moreover, the capabilities of this utility are not limited to diagnostics alone.
Application for system administrators
Every system administrator should have the NetTools application
Take a look at what the NetTools application is capable of:
- Shows external and local IP addresses;
- Searches for all devices on the local network;
- Checks the specified range of IP addresses and ports;
- Check the ping of the connection;
- Shows the route to the specified host;
- Searches for ports in the specified range;
- Displays DNS records for the specified domain;
- Displays domain owner information;
- Checks the availability of servers;
- Wakes up the specified machine on the network;
- Allows you to test servers;
- Support IP Calculator.
As you can see NetTools Toolbox and really rich – that’s it for a professional system administrator. However, for the average user, this application can also be very useful. Let’s look at specific examples.
How to Check Your IP?
The basic function of NetTools is − to determine the IP address:
- Download the NetTools application from the App Store;
- Run it and open the Network Information tab;
NetTools allows you to determine your IP address and other network data
- At the very top, find the General section;
- The external IP field is your external IP and the local IP field is your local IP.
Download NetTools
No need to be afraid that by external IP someone calculates your position. In fact, it is almost impossible to do so, since the information about the owner, his home address and even the information the computer used is not sewn into the IP itself. As a rule, this is only the city, the name of the Internet service provider and, at best, the legal address where it is registered.
In addition to IP addresses (external and local), here you can see information about the provider, router configuration, subnet mask, current connection source and much more. The only thing missing here is the MAC addresses.
But the point is not in the application, but in the fact that Apple prohibits third-party software from receiving this information for security purposes. But Google has no such restrictions. Therefore, Network Utilities for Android will even show the MAC address.
See who is connected to Wi-Fi
If necessary, NetTools lets you know who else is connected to your router. It happens that you forget to password protect your home network, or your neighbours just guess the security combination and calmly connect to it, spending free traffic. Here’s how to tell if there’s an extra among the paired devices:
- Launch the NetTools application on your iPhone;
- Open the side menu and select LAN Explorer;
LAN Explorer lets you find additional devices on your home network
- Without modifying the En0 value in the search line, click Start;
- Wait for all devices to load and check them.
Green indicates active devices that are working at the time of the scan. Red – passively connected. For example, a television connected to Wi-Fi, but disconnected from power, or, say, smart lights, gateways, etc. In some cases, the application determines either the type of device, its proper name, or the operating system it is running on.
Thanks to this, it turns out to be quite easy to figure out where the smartphone is, where the TV is and where the tablet is. But for the most part, the app only sets local IP address devices. Unfortunately, this won’t work for the average user. But the system administrator will find out – he will log in and find out what is what. Plus, NetTools even lets you wake up devices remotely. Quite simply know the IP and MAC address.
How to wake up a computer remotely?
I warn you right now: not all devices can wake up remotely via NetTools. For example, I failed to wake up the iPad. Maybe Apple protects its gadgets from such manipulation, or maybe I just did something wrong. However, with machines running Windows and Linux, there should be no problem. I hope you if you have enough knowledge, will figure it out yourself.
- Launch the NetTools application on your iPhone;
- Select Wake On LAN from the left side menu;
Remote wakeup doesn’t work with all devices
- Click “+” and add your device data;
- When you need to wake him up, just click on his name.
Obviously, not everyone will need this feature. In fact, it is not a toy at all, but rather a professional tool that can be used for network diagnosis and external control of the working machine. System administrators will certainly understand why this is necessary. And you can just try his role and experiment with the remote wake-up computer.
In general, it makes more sense to use the wake-up feature in tandem with servers. For example, if the computer acts as a host to which other devices connect. Then it is convenient to connect to it remotely and wake it up, for example, to work through AnyDesk or other applications. The main thing is that the computer itself is turned on and in standby. Because it won’t work to power it remotely via NetTools.
Scan external networks
Scan an arbitrary range of IP addresses – this, although not exclusive to NetTools, but the process itself in this application is better than that of many competitors. It provides the ability to scan ports directly during a host scan. And, meanwhile, it can be very useful for system administration. Why this is necessary, we will not explain on the fingers. Ultimately, this feature will probably be of no use to the average user. But this will certainly be useful for system administrators:
- Launch the NetTools application on your iPhone;
- Open the side menu and select IP Range Scanner;
First set the port range
In these tabs, you will get all the necessary information
- In the settings, set the port range you want, then click Start;
- Wait for the results of your request and analyze them.
Scan ports from your phone
As we noted above, NetTools is more of a workhorse than a philistine. As a result, the functionality here is mostly professionally oriented. One of the features of the application that emphasizes its purpose is the function to scan open ports. It allows you to check network security and detect network worm activity. Verification is performed through the Port Scanner tool.
Port scanning will help determine the security of your network
NetTools offers a wide range of settings. For example, you can choose here TCP/UDP protocols. Simply set the required parameters before scanning and the app will automatically provide you with the relevant information upon request.
Another cool feature is ping check. Simply put, it is a signal delay indicator. If a high ping, which means the signal lasts a long time and the connection speed may drop. Normally ping values vary, but 5-15ms is a good indicator. And, if it is higher, then something is wrong with the connection. We talked about how to deal with this in a separate article, be sure to read it – it will be interesting.
Many probably don’t even know what is IP calculator but he is there too. This is another feature for system administrators only, which allows you to calculate address range, netmask, number of hosts in range, address and network class. In general, the tool is absolutely necessary – provided that you know why it is needed and how it works in general. The main thing is that for many NetTools can become a real working tool that can be used absolutely free.
