What is a Gapless Screen and is it Good?

As technology advances, there are more and more different ways to enhance the display. First, its resolution increased, then the diagonal began to increase, and along with this, OLED technologies developed so much that they could become massive, but, fortunately, have not yet found wide application in the tablets.

But there was a change that few people noticed, because not everyone understood what it was – an air gap-free display. And not everyone understood the advantages if they did not compare the screens with each other.

I first noticed this when I picked up the iPad Air in one hand and the iPad Air 2 in the other. Since then, everything has fallen into place. Naturally, without a coating is better, but such screens also have a very serious drawback.

Gapless screens are good, but they also have drawbacks.

What is Gapess Display?

You may have guessed that the main advantage of airless display technology is that the image is much better there. In the iPad example I cited above, one seemed to have a rather blurry movie on screen, while the other didn’t.

Indeed, when there is no air gap (such a screen is also called laminated), even with the same matrix, the picture becomes more saturated and it seems that it is not just streaming from somewhere below, but simply drawn on the glass itself. This is especially noticeable when viewed at an angle or on a clear day.

By the way, do you know the difference between Samsung’s AMOLED and SUPER AMOLED displays? The same layer. In the second case, this is not the case, and that was already enough to give a separate name to this type of display.

Good phone screens are always made without air gaps.

Which Screen is Stronger and Less Scratched?

The glass, which is made in a single module with a matrix, among other things, is also more scratch-resistant, as it should be more durable on its own. It also beats less often because the structure is more rigid and bends less during falls.

The main Disadvantage of Modern Screens

But the problem is that if there was a fall, but the glass still broke, then here, more than ever, it would be more accurate to describe the situation with the words “the screen broke broken”. It is very difficult to repair such a module separately.

The glass is tightly bonded to the matrix and it takes a lot of effort to separate it. And without separating it, replacing the screen will cost several tens of thousands of rubles.

The problem has become particularly acute with the release of the latest generations of iPad Pro (post 2018) and iPad Air 4th generation and newer. They are made without an air gap, which makes their repair much more difficult.

The latest generations of iPad Pro and Air are made without air gaps.

Our friends at the Apple Pro Service Center, who help us repair and customize equipment, as well as provide materials for items with recommendations, spoke in more detail about these screens.

They are able to “glue” the screens to replace only the glass, even in screens without an air gap. For replacement prices, please visit their website. with promo code “AIRLESS” our readers are provided discount of 2500 rubles the price listed on the site for your specific iPad Air 2 model.

How to change iPad glass

First, quite a long and painstaking job is done to remove the fragments and remove the screen from the iPad case. For this, both “ordinary” tweezers and rather specific tools specially designed for dismantling screens are used.

When the screen is removed, attachments are removed from it, including sensors or a button (for iPad Air 2, iPad Pro 9.7, 10.5″). This is necessary for the works, and after their completion, the items are put back in place.

The old adhesive layer, thanks to which the screen was held in place, is also removed. Before installation, a new one is used, which will hold the screen as securely as the factory one.

Capturing a screen is an art in itself.

After that, a rather rare special equipment comes into play, which serves to fix and glue the screen modules. After processing, the damaged glass is cut from the matrix, the work of which is checked to determine the feasibility of further work.

It is necessary to remove all remnants of the old adhesive base.

Further work is carried out in a special dust-free chamber, where an overpressure is created to prevent dust from entering between the matrix and the glass. Once the new glass is in place, the module is placed in a high-tech “furnace” that bonds the parts together so they fit and function as they did from the factory.

The Regular iPad Screen Replacement Process

After this procedure, all that remains is to install the screen in place and check its operation. When everything is done, the satisfied customer gets their tablet back and saves a very decent amount of money. A similar procedure, by the way, applies to the iPhone of all models.
